Partnering on a holistic approach to environmental education

Along with enhancing connections with nature and encouraging environmental stewardship, environmental education has been shown to build critical thinking skills and improve academic achievement. In partnership with the Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation, Channelview ISD has initiated a whole-district approach to environmental education and outdoor learning that will benefit students and their east Harris County community.

With the Foundation’s support, CISD brought together a diverse team of district leaders, educators, parents, students and community members to design an approach to integrate environmental education and outdoor learning across the district’s learning framework. The plan includes developing high-quality environmental education curricula for pre-kindergarten through high school grades; coordinating environmentally focused field trips, after-school programs and summer enrichment activities; exposing students to “green” career opportunities; and fostering engagement with the broader community.

To support this work, CISD plans to provide tailored professional development to its educators, cultivate partnerships with organizations that can enhance the district’s curricula and out-of-school opportunities, and implement environmentally friendly campus policies and practices.

The Foundation has supported CISD’s transition to implementation with support for piloting an environmentally focused after-school program, developing a set of “traveling trunks” with equipment to support in-class learning, and designing an evaluation framework. In addition, the Foundation is supporting the construction of an outdoor learning center at a 15-acre forest in the heart of Channelview that is owned by the district – in addition to serving all CISD students, this special greenspace will be used as a place for community gatherings.

CISD envisions its students becoming innovative, responsible leaders capable of addressing local environmental challenges and advocating for their community. According to Dr. Tory Hill, CISD Superintendent, “The partnership with the Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation is a game-changer for our district. Through their support, we are enriching our environmental education efforts, giving students unique opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, and inspiring future leaders who are both academically equipped and environmentally conscious.”
